RNC shells out $150K for Palin fashion

I'm sure that's exactly where the people that donated to the RNC hoped their money would go.

But then... she did need the help.

[Edited to rehash an old photo, so as to not offend. =)]

Oh my god that is a travesty against the color pink. That wouldn't be caught dead hanging on my grandmother's shower rod.

As much as I hate Palin, that can't be real.

OMG

What the hell is that!? It's like...something your mother's strange crafty friend would make for a four year old. On an adult, it's just vaguely terrifying.

I suggest you inform the McCain campaign of your feelings on the subject:

the RNC spent $150K on clothes for her and this is the best they could come up with? I don't even think Thrift Village has stuff like this.

good gravy - I cringe to think about what that money could be used for otherwise.

Although I did vomit in my mouth a little at the pink outfit....

That blouse is a traditional Native style. Why *she's* wearing it, I'm not sure, but let's not run down Native dress too much.

My mistake. I thought the dress was just unflattering, but now that I know its Native American traditional dress, I'm disgusted that she's wearing it.

Especially given her crap record in dealing with Alaskan Natives.

I think we need GFY's Herr Largerfeld to comment on this...

how stumpy do her legs look in those boots...??

it's just eeew, & I hate pink, so am iased but even then I can still give credit where it's due for a well cut, designed & tailored pink get-up.

Also super-fantastico news about Palin's costs.

I like how in the article, they reviewed the other campaigns and didn't find similar costs filed into party ledgers. Apparently, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden feel that dressing themselves goes hand-in-hand with, y'know, being an adult.

Truthfully that looks a lot like some of the stuff the Athabaskans make and wear. I know it's really weird, but most of it does have that almost mu-mu look with the other ornamental bands of "scrap" fabric. Also, my guess is those big flowers might be cut caribou fur. Honestly, it could be a gift from someone. I wouldn't believe it either, but Joe's ex wife showed up in the blue speckled sister looking dress to that one when we had a meeting with her about their son.

I'll see if I can dig up some pictures online of modern native stuff. There should be some fairly easily findable since the inter tribal conference is coming up fairly shortly. But it's time to leave for work now.

UAF's museum web page has an example of Native Arts in the made locally spot. http://www.uaf.edu/museum/exhibit/galleries/mif-nativearts.html It's a slightly different style, and a more elaborate pattern in the fabric- but same idea.

A picture from the AFN's 2007 convention shows two women preparing part of the banquit and wearing dresses with hoods, again similar pattern yet less elaborate trim. http://www.nativefederation.org/convention/documents/BanquetProgram07_lores.pdf

I'm still kicking myself for not having my camera. I was at the museum this weekend to check out the history of trapping and hunting exhibit and a few of the artists were demonstrating traditional crafts- including a lovely group of women beading, and making those cut caribou fur flowers. They were wearing very similar dresses, and didn't mind pictures. I got to learn how to make those flowers and would have been crafting stuff all day with them while chatting if it hadn't been time to go since the kiddo was going to a friend's house that evening...

For some reason I'm having pitiful luck today on the internet, but that gives an idea of the dress itself. No idea why she's wearing it- most likely someone gave it to her as a gift. There's a lot of Alaskan Natives who live around Anchorage/Wasilla area. For that matter Natives aren't the minority up here in general.

Truthfully they aren't my thing for a couple reasons. I rarely if ever wear a dress or skirt. I don't like to and I can't really do that at work for safty reasons. (Yeah, loose clothing in this type of work environment. Smart.)

My mistake. I didn't realize it was Native American dress; I was mostly commenting on the change from this to Valentino at the cost of the public.
